“Ultimate Sports Punter” is the ultimate sports tipping competition. It’s the one competition where punters tip the outcome of all sports. It’s not your standard competition where punters are asked to pick the winner between Collingwood and Carlton – we want to find the Ultimate Sports Punter. We want people to pick the winner of the AFL Premiership before the first ball has been bounced… and find the winner of 59 other sporting events for that matter.

So who is the Ultimate Sports Punter?

In the first week of February, each competitor selects who they think will win each competition from a list of 60 sporting events to be held in 2019. Picking the winning selection is worth 5 (five) points, 3 (three) points for second and 1 (one) point for third with more rules in place for tied placings. The person with the most points at the end of the year is crowned the “Ultimate Sports Punter”.

It wouldn’t be a competition these days if there weren’t lifelines to use. In USP, there are three varieties of lifelines; Joker, Wildcard and the Super Sub.

Each punter has one “Wildcard” which they must nominate when they submit their selections. The “Wildcard” gives the punter a certain maximum score (5 points) for that event and does not need to make a selection.

Each punter has one “Joker” which they must nominate when they submit their selections. The “Joker” gives the punter an opportunity to receive double points (10 points) for that event, although they must pick the winner of the event. They will be not be awarded any points if they finish second or worse.

Each punter has one “Super Sub” which they can use during the season to change one of their selections. However, the event must not have started yet and must be submitted by email the night before it is scheduled to begin. They cannot change a Joker or Wildcard.

There are six “Gamblers” in 2019 and a Punter may choose to wager 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 points on the result in an attempt to win these points. However, the punter will have those points deducted from their score if the selection is wrong. A punter may chose to “pass” and not make a selection and they will neither win nor lose points. The gambler is used by submitting a clear notification of selection (or change) and points gambled (or changed) via email prior to the event commencing. The gambler can be altered at any time prior to the listed date (you can select or choose to gamble more/less points).

It’s sounds easy enough and most punters declare themselves the winner after submitting their tips, but it’s not as easy as it looks. Think about it… How many teams or athletes go back-to-back? Not many in a year.

The new season of USP begins soon and and all entries are to be submitted no later than 11:59pm Monday 25 February 2019.
